CARNELIAN

Rich, orange-red carnelian is a form of chalcedony, an elegant gem found in India and South America. Carnelian ranges from orange to red to brownish-red. Carnelian has a long and storied past, and was once considered strictly the property of the noble class. People holding a high social status were often buried wearing or holding this gemstone.

Carnelian is said to be an energy booster, and is thought to boost confidence in the shy person and increase the sense of humor.

Carnelian is rated at 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness. They are strung and worn as beaded strands or cut into cabochons or cameos for pendants, earrings, and other pieces.
